The Potential for Dietary Factors to Prevent or Treat OA

This session will review research on dietary factors in OA and the levels of evidence for their efficacy in prevention and treatment of disease.  This will include potential mechanisms of action and differences to conventional pharmaceuticals.  I will present data from our own research on the role of sulforaphane, a bioactive molecule obtained from eating cruciferous vegetables, in OA.  This starts from epidemiology, moves to basic biology and progresses through to clinical trial.  The issues that need to be addressed in research on dietary factors in OA and the problems of undertaking clinical trials in this area will also be discussed, as well as a look to the future.
