Joint Tissues Impacting Nerves (Stefan Lohmander)
Joint pain is the primary symptom of osteoarthritis. Pain drives the patient to seek healthcare. Pain is a major driver of functional limitations and OA burden of disease. Pain is most often the primary symptom we as scientists or health professionals more or less successfully target with non-pharmacological treatment, with drugs or with surgery. Yet, our understanding of the mechanisms and sources of joint pain in OA is embarrassingly incomplete. Is it the nerves impacting on joint tissues or is it the joint tissues impacting on nerves? Or are both processes active and important in the OA joint? All OA joints, or just some of them, sometimes?
