There is still a great disconnect between preclinical research into the neurobiological mechanisms of pain and effective new therapeutics in the clinic. Given the differences in how pain is evaluated and studied in animal models and humans, can a multidisciplinary approach to OA pain be used to improve the understanding of OA pain mechanisms applicable to humans? To address this question, this discussion group will include short talks and panelists from preclinical and clinical backgrounds to lead discussions on the following topics.

  • To distinguish possible differences in OA pain aetiology, structural pathology, and patient phenotypes to formulate appropriate treatment plans.

  • To identify steps for improving the evaluation of promising preclinical therapies in animal models for translation to clinical trials.
