Professor Ian M. Clark

University of East Anglia

Ian Clark has been active in the field of osteoarthritis research for more than 30 years.  His initial interests were in the role of proteolytic enzymes in the homeostasis or destruction of articular cartilage.  This included identifying new proteinases whose expression was altered in cartilage from OA patients, as well as work on the regulation of proteinase or inhibitor gene expression.  This led to an interest in the role of histone deacetylase inhibitors in preventing cartilage destruction.  Current interests are (i) the role of microRNAs in chondrogenesis and OA and (ii) the impact of diet-derived bioactive molecules on cartilage metabolism and OA.
